Social Media Was Used To Incite Violence -Babagana Monguno

Babagana Monguno, The National Security Officer (NSA), said that social media was used to incite the uprising protest and it is still used to incite violence across Nigeria.

This was said by Munguno in Abuja, during the cybersecurity on Wednesday 28th, 2020.

Monguno also added that social media poses an increasing challenge of cyber terrorism. This was represented by Aliyu Mohammed in the office of the Secretary to the government of the federation.

Here is his statement:
“We are witnesses to the use of social media to disseminate subversive content to incite violence and heightened tension, causing unrest and sparking widespread looting and destruction across the country.”

Speaking also at the forum, the Chief of Defence Staff, Abayomi Olonisakin, said cyber terrorism is the most unpredictable challenge Nigeria is currently battling with. Represented by Charles Oghonwen, an air vice-marshal from the defense headquarters, Olonisakin said

“Cyberspace has been the main warfare after the lands, sea, air, and space has no boundary and hence does not obey conditional rules in warfare. It remains open to exploitation by state actors, organized syndicates, sects, criminals, and terrorists. Cyberterrorism has become the most precarious challenge facing us today as a nation.

The use of cyberspace to facilitate various terrorist activities, such as recruitment, training, propaganda, intelligence gathering, and fundraising, cyber terrorism is now globally recognized as the fundamental threat to global security.”

This has made the minister of information, Lai Mohammed to call for a swift regulation of social media, saying that fake news poses a threat to Nigeria at the moment. This comment was barely 24hrs.

During the uprising protest, Nigeria has been in an unrest state, this protest evoked a lot of other crimes like stealing, looting, and destruction of government properties.

Social media was the sole tool used in communicating all the things that happened, especially that if the Lekki tollgate. Babagana Monguno.
