Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Scholarship Application

The Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Scholarship is available to women who write horror. It was granted for the first time in 2014 and is given each year.

The purpose of The Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Scholarship was described by HWA President Rocky Wood as follows: “It is extremely evident to the HWA that there are unseen, but real hurdles restricting the amount of horror literature being produced by women. Although there are many excellent female authors in our field, we believe that there is room for more women to publish horror literature.

This scholarship, which bears the name of the legendary female horror author, intends to support the growth of those already writing in our genre and to attract additional female writers to it. The Horror Writers Association Scholarship is now available to all of our members, regardless of gender, as the HWA seeks to promote the horror genre in all of its forms.

Each Scholarship requires the same application, and the winners will be chosen by a subcommittee of the HWA Board. Each scholarship is worth $2500, which may be used throughout the two years following its award for recognized writing education.

“These are the biggest and, conceivably, the only Horror-related Scholarships available. As funding permits, HWA plans to complement these scholarships with lesser donations, according to Wood.
