How to Make a Hand Sanitizer

Must Read

Like the world is battling corona virus now, the importance of hand treatment has been emphasized as a major means of controlling the spread of infectious diseases. The use of Hand sanitizer has also been told to be practiced in every home and workplace.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has instructed us to approve the use of an alcohol-based sanitizer containing at least 60 percent alcohol if no water and soap option is available. The rise of covid-19 has increased the demand for Hand Sanitizer in stores around the world, which has led to increase in prices and shortages in some areas.

Below is a DIY guide to manufacturing a handmade sanitizer for home use.

Ingredients Needed

Making your own hand sanitizer is easy to do and requires only a few ingredients:

  1. Rubbing alcohol / Isopropyl (99 volume of alcohol) without using other alcoholic beverages (methanol, butanol) is toxic and can cause skin irritation.
  1. Aloe vera gel (Prevents dry hands from alcohol)
  1. Essential oils (optional) e.g. lavender oil, or use lemon juice when not available
  1. Vitamin E (optional) oil can add moisturizing properties to the hand sanitizer

The key to making an effective, antibacterial sanitizer is

Make sure you adhere to the 2: 1 proportion of alcohol in aloe vera. This keeps the alcohol content at 60 percent. This is the minimum number required to kill most viruses, (CDCRecommendation).

Make sure that the alcohol used in hand sanitizer is not diluted. Combine all ingredients in a container.

To produce a large amount of hand sanitizer, download the World Health Organization (WHO) formula for hand sanitizer.

There you have it, an easy and simple way to make your own hand sanitizer at home without worrying about the high price of buying from the store. Store your Sanitizer in a small container that can fit your pocket or bag, as you might want to use it from time to time. Share this post to people you think might need this guide.
